Peggy Semler

Peggy Semler

Chair / Acting Secretary - Ullinish

Peggy is retired and lives on a croft in North West Skye.  An ecologist by training, she now has more time to spend on her personal interests and volunteers for various environmental organisations.  Horrified to find the state that Skye’s beaches were in when she came to live here, she got involved cleaning them and began working together with others around 2017. She has been involved with Skye Beach Cleans since its birth.  She has been key to getting it formally set up as a registered charity so that we can apply for funding to take forward its activities, and is looking forward to seeing it progress with its long terms aims, together with the other Trustees.

She is also an active member of the local clay pigeon shooting club and Portree Gaelic choir.

Rob Jopling

Rob Jopling

Treasurer - Caroy

Now retired, after spending a career in structural engineering, I am lucky enough to be able to spend my time, either at my house on the west coast of Skye or travelling in my campervan. I have always been concerned about environmental issues. Over forty years ago I was an active volunteer with groups running pioneering kerbside recycling projects in Bristol and in the USA.

Skye is a wonderful place, but sadly many of the visitors to the island are unaware of the fact that many of the beautiful beaches are strewn with marine litter. Since becoming aware of this environmental problem, I decided that I wanted to do something positive to help and to make others aware of the need for action by polluters, by local and national governments, by local communities and by the general public. That is why I became a Trustee of Skye Beach Cleans

Trustee - Camas Cross

Emma is a writer, naturalist and outdoors educator with a special interest in ecology and the climate emergency. Aside from cleaning the beaches near where she lives, she enjoys activism and helping people to understand that the environment is everyone’s responsibility. Author of “I Used to Think Vegans Were Dicks”, she doesn’t take life too seriously – contrary to how she feels about marine litter – something she’s very serious about helping to clean up.

Katy Lawrence

Katy Lawrence

Admin - IT - Social Media - Feorlig

Katy lives in northwest Skye, near the village of Dunvegan. She was surprised by the extent of pollution around Skye, especially after seeing the condition of the beaches following a storm. Her partner enjoys beachcombing, and while they often find driftwood and shards of glass or pottery, Katy noticed that the local beaches are filled with plastic, nets, and ropes. Observing wildlife and livestock chewing on rope and plastic motivated her to take action.

In her day job, Katy works as a Community Development Officer. She also serves on the board of the Dunvegan Community Development Trust and spends her free time playing board games and reading.

Emily Johns

Emily Johns

Inverness

Emily lived on Skye having moved up from Yorkshire in 2022, and was shocked by the amount of beach litter on her first visit to Camasunary.  She became instantly hooked on beach cleaning on such a big scale, and very quickly met Peggy and learned about the  work she was doing across the island to make inroads into the problem.

Emily now lives in Inverness and support Skye Beach Cleans from afar, alongside her day to day work in Nature restoration funding, and supporting business across the UK to do more for Nature.
